Durian Flowers: A Rare Tropical Delight from My 40-Year-Old Tree

Nestled in the heart of my farm stands a majestic durian tree, now over 40 years old—a living testament to time, patience, and nature’s generosity. Every year, it bursts into bloom with clusters of creamy yellowish-white flowers that hang like delicate lanterns from its branches. These blossoms aren’t just beautiful—they’re edible, aromatic, and deeply rooted in local culinary traditions.

Durian flowers are a seasonal treat, often overlooked in favour of the fruit. But for those who know, they offer a unique flavour and texture that transforms everyday dishes into something truly special. In my kitchen, they become the star of two beloved recipes:

·         Curry Durian Flowers: Slow-cooked in a rich coconut-based curry, the flowers absorb the spices beautifully, adding a subtle sweetness and a soft, velvety texture to the dish.

·         Stir-Fried with Belacan: A quick sauté with spicy sambal belacan brings out their earthy notes, pairing perfectly with rice and other local sides.

The Gentle Fall of Durian Flowers: A Morning Ritual Beneath My 40-Year-Old Tree

There’s a quiet magic that happens in the stillness of night beneath my 40-year-old durian tree. As the moon rises and the forest hushes, the tree begins its silent offering—durian flowers, delicate and fragrant, begin to fall gently to the ground. By dawn, the earth beneath the canopy is scattered with these pale yellow blossoms, like nature’s confetti marking the start of a new day.

This is the moment we wait for. Just before sunrise, we step under the durian tree with baskets in hand, collecting the fresh flowers before the sun climbs too high. Timing is everything. Durian flowers are sensitive to oxidation—by afternoon, they begin to brown and lose their subtle aroma and flavor. Picking them early ensures they retain their freshness, making them perfect for cooking.

In Sarawak, durian flowers are more than just a seasonal curiosity—they’re a cherished ingredient. Stir-fried with belacan, they take on a smoky, savoury depth. Cooked into curry, they absorb spices beautifully, adding a soft, almost creamy texture to the dish. Their fleeting availability makes them all the more special, a true farm-to-table delicacy that connects us to the land and its rhythms.

Watching the flowers fall each night is a reminder of nature’s quiet generosity. And gathering them in the morning feels like a ritual passed down through generations—a moment of gratitude, a celebration of abundance, and a promise of good food to come.

Health & Nutritional Benefits of Durian Flowers
Durian flowers are more than just a culinary delicacy—they’re packed with subtle nutrients and compounds that support wellness:

  • Rich in Antioxidants: These flowers contain antioxidants, which help combat free radicals in the body and may reduce inflammation.
  • Vitamin C Content: A modest amount of vitamin C helps boost immunity and supports skin health.
  • Low in Calories: When cooked, durian flowers are light and nutritious, making them a great addition to balanced meals.
  • Iron Content: They contain trace amounts of iron, which supports healthy blood circulation.

Durian flowers are a rare and seasonal delicacy, especially cherished in Sarawak and other parts of Borneo. Their soft texture and faintly sweet aroma make them perfect for bold, flavorful dishes.

The Guardian of Our Permaculture Garden

In the heart of our permaculture farm, where every plant has a purpose and every creature a home, a new guardian has risen. It's not a fierce beast or a watchful scarecrow, but something far more vibrant and alive: the Gac fruit.

It all began with a delicate, unassuming flower. It was a creamy, star-shaped blossom, its petals soft as silk, with a dark, mysterious heart. It seemed to appear overnight, a quiet testament to the life humming beneath the soil. It was a shy bloom, opening its face to the morning sun and folding inward as the day grew old, as if protecting a secret.

But that secret was revealed in time. Where the flower once stood, a small, green, spiky orb began to form. Day by day, it grew, taking on a more pronounced, pear-like shape. We watched it with a sense of wonder, this strange new addition to our edible landscape. It was a testament to the health of our soil, the abundance of our compost, and the balanced ecosystem we strive to create.

And then, the transformation was complete. The Gac fruit, once a prickly green promise, ripened into a fiery orange globe. Its vibrant hue stood out against the deep green leaves of the trellis, a beacon of health and vitality. Each spike on its skin seemed to catch the sunlight, making it a living jewel in our garden.

This fruit, known as the "fruit from heaven," is more than just a beautiful sight. It's a symbol of our farm's philosophy. It thrives in harmony with its surroundings, a testament to the power of a regenerative system. We didn’t force it; we nurtured the environment in which it could thrive.

Soon, we will harvest this incredible fruit and share its nutritional gifts. But for now, we simply admire it. It's a reminder that the most extraordinary things often grow from the most humble beginnings, and that the best harvest is one that honors the land that gave it life.

The 'Fruit from Heaven' and its Many Benifits
Beyond its striking appearance and symbolic importance on our farm, the Gac fruit is a nutritional powerhouse. It's often referred to as the "fruit from heaven" because of its incredible health benefits, a true gift from nature.

One of the most remarkable things about Gac fruit is its extremely high concentration of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. It contains significantly more lycopene than even tomatoes, which are famous for it. This antioxidant is known to support heart health and may play a role in protecting against certain diseases.

Gac fruit is also packed with beta-carotene, the precursor to Vitamin A. Our bodies convert beta-carotene into this essential vitamin, which is crucial for maintaining healthy vision, a strong immune system, and glowing skin. The vibrant orange and red color of the fruit is a direct result of these carotenoids.

This fruit also contains a variety of other vitamins and minerals, and its pulp is used in traditional medicine for a number of ailments. Whether consumed fresh, as a juice, or as a supplement, the Gac fruit offers a potent dose of natural goodness.

We are so proud to be growing this incredible fruit on our farm, not only for its beauty and story but also for the nourishing gifts it offers. It's a testament to the fact that what's good for the earth is also good for us.

From Seed to Sweetness: The Journey of Our Purple Custard Apple

At Greendreamer Farm, where nature leads and we follow with care, every fruit tells a story. One of our most captivating chapters begins with a seed—small, unassuming, and full of promise. That seed becomes the purple custard apple, a fruit as rich in flavor as it is in meaning. Unlike the slow-growing varieties found in cooler climates, our custard apples thrive in Sarawak’s tropical warmth. With the right soil, sunlight, and a touch of patience, they go from seed to harvest in just one and a half years. It’s a rhythm that mirrors the pace of life here: steady, generous, and deeply connected to the land.

The Growth Timeline
Months 0–3: Germination & Seedling Stage The journey begins with germination. Within a few weeks, the seed awakens and pushes through the soil, forming a vibrant seedling. We nurture it with natural compost and gentle watering, letting the roots settle deep into our farm’s fertile ground.

Months 4–9: Sapling Development As the tree grows, it begins to shape its identity—broad leaves, a sturdy trunk, and a quiet resilience. By month nine, it’s standing tall, ready to take on the next phase.

Months 10–14: Flowering & Pollination The first blossoms appear, delicate and greenish-white. Pollinators—bees, beetles, and sometimes our own hands—help nature along. Each flower holds the potential for fruit, and we watch closely as they transform.

Months 15–18: Fruit Formation & Ripening The magic unfolds. Small green fruitlets emerge and slowly swell, turning deep purple as they ripen. Their skin softens, their aroma sweetens, and their creamy flesh becomes a symbol of everything we stand for: nourishment, family, and connection.

This timeline can shift slightly depending on rainfall, temperature, and soil health.

Why It Matters

This fruit isn’t just grown—it’s cultivated with intention. It reflects our commitment to natural farming, to honoring the land, and to producing food that feeds both body and soul. The purple custard apple is more than a harvest—it’s a celebration. Whether you’re biting into its velvety pulp or watching it ripen on the branch, you’re experiencing a piece of Greendreamer Farm’s heart. And that’s something worth sharing.

At Greendreamer Farm, we believe in nurturing what nature gives us—and sometimes, nature surprises us with something truly special. One such marvel is the nangcam, a naturally cultivated fruit that’s a crossbreed between jackfruit and cempedak.

🍈 What Is Nangcam?

Nangcam is not your everyday fruit. It carries the robust size and texture of jackfruit, paired with the rich aroma and sweetness of cempedak. The result? A fruit that’s both hearty and fragrant, with a flavor profile that feels like a tropical celebration.

  • Texture: Firm yet fibrous, perfect for cooking or eating fresh.

  • Taste: A sweet, creamy blend with hints of banana and honey.

  • Aroma: Bold and inviting, like ripe cempedak with a touch of jackfruit musk.

🌱 Naturally Grown, Patiently Nurtured

This particular nangcam tree was planted three years ago, without any artificial intervention—just soil, sun, and care. It’s a testament to what patience and natural farming can yield. No genetic tweaking—just a spontaneous hybrid that chose to thrive.

We’ve watched it grow from a sapling into a fruit-bearing beauty, and now it stands tall among our other crops, offering its bounty to those who appreciate authenticity and flavor.

🧡 Why It Matters

In a world of engineered produce, nangcam reminds us that nature still has surprises up its sleeve. It’s a symbol of resilience, harmony, and the quiet magic of biodiversity. At my hoby farm, it fits perfectly into our values of family, nourishment, and connection.

Breadfruit(Artocarpus Altilis) 面包果

The most rewarding aspect of being a farmer is connecting to the land and the food source.  Seeing the fruits of one's labour is a good deep fulfilment.  There is endless excitement in watching seeds sprout and grow into a bountiful harvest.

Mature breadfruits

I planted this breadfruit four years ago, and now I enjoy the excitement of harvesting it.  Breadfruit, a tree of the mulberry and jackfruit family, a large fruit of the tropical regions is a staple food of most people in this region. Its name is derived from the texture of the moderately ripe fruit when cooked, similar to freshly baked bread and having a potato-like flavour.

The trees are monoecious, with male and female flowers growing on the same tree. The male flowers emerge first, followed shortly afterwards by the female flowers. The latter grow into capitula, which are capable of pollination just three days later. Pollination occurs mainly by fruit bats, but cultivated varieties produce fruit without pollination. The compound, false fruit develops from the swollen perianth and originates from 1,500 to 2,000 flowers visible on the skin of the fruit as hexagon-like disks.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breadfruit#:)

This beautiful fruit tree grows 12 to 18 metres high and is not suitable to grow in your urban backyard, it is commonly cultivated in suburban or rural areas, people with larger urban land can be cultivated.

Pulasan

 Pulasan

I have planted this pulasan for about four years, now on August 8, 2024, I have seen the pulasan tree start to flower. This pulasan tree is grown by using seeds, pulasan tree can be propagated using seeds from pulasan fruit or using the grafting method. To avoid variation in gender that will cause the fruit produced to be different from the original tree, it is advised to propagate the plant by grafting.

Pulasan originally came from Southeast Asia, and it grows well in Malaysia. is a tropical fruit in the soapberry family Sapindaceae. It is closely related to the rambutan and sometimes confused with it. Other related soapberry family fruits include lychee and longan. Usually eaten fresh, it is sweeter than the rambutan and lychee, but very rare outside Southeast Asia. The grafted tree will be produced as soon as two years

Soursop ( Annona Muricata)

Soursop is a type of tropical fruit that is very commonly grown in areas with a tropical climate, the spiky-skinned fruit has many health benefits. I have planted twelve soursop trees on my farm, there are two varieties, one variety that tastes sweet and another variety that tastes sweet and sour. unfortunately, some trees die during the monsoon season.

Growing a soursop tree in a tropical climate like Sarawak is quite easy, this tree can be grown using seeds and will bear fruit within three years. Soursop trees like fertile and well-drained soil, if the soil does not meet these conditions, do soil restoration by mixing a lot of organic matter in the soil including compost, chicken manure or cow dung. The first two years are the vegetation period, I fertilize using organic fertilizer, the third year I start fertilizing using granule fertilizer (30%)with NPK 15-3-20-2+9S+TE and 70% organic fertilizer.

Besides its pleasant flavour, soursop fruit benefits include 71 kcal of energy, 247 grams of protein, and calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus — not to mention it’s a source of vitamins C and A.

Soursop can be eaten fresh or used in ice cream, mousse, jellies, soufflés, sorbet, cakes and candy. Filipinos use the young fruit as a vegetable while in the Caribbean, the pulp is strained and the milk is mixed with sugar to drink or mix with wine or brandy.
